Fumigation


A piece of art is decontaminated through the fumigation process. The type of art and the materials used by the artist are important to determine the adequate decontamination method.

Usually mildew, fungus and oxidation of microscopical particles contamination affects the colors, build spots, changes the color scheme and alter the fiber's physical structure of the artwork.

Fumigation terminates the reproduction of the fungus spores, so that contamination is avoided. Several kind of fumigation are used for determined media. This process is applied with vapors in a specialized fumigation chamber at Larrazabal Conservation Studio.

Orthophemilphenol or Thymol fungicides are the most common chemicals used for this procedure. They totally end with the contamination process.
